The summer brings a different invisible barrier: food insecurity. Across the country nutritious meals become a privilege when school meal programs are not available for kids to access. Understanding Food Insecurity

Food insecurity can be defined as the lack of access to healthy and nutritious food for a household. During the school year, many children rely on free or reduced-price meals provided at school to meet their nutritional needs. When summer break begins, these meals may no longer be available, placing additional strain on families already facing financial difficulties.

In Pierce County, 1 in 6 people are unsure of where their next meal will come from, but for children at risk of going hungry the number is closer to 1 in 4 kids. Ā Food insecurity spikes during the summer, with families struggling to provide regular meals for their children. This affects not only the physical health of children but can also impact children’s mental health and academic performance throughout the year.

We are accepting non-perishable food donations for our local food bank! Feel free to drop off any donations to a Pediatrics Northwest location near you!
